CSCS, Lugano, Switzerland

SWITCH provides the high-performance network that connects Swiss academic institutions to one another and to the internet. The assignment was editorial photography for the SWITCH Annual Report, shot at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano. CSCS houses some of the fastest computing infrastructure in Europe. Its halls hold server racks, cooling systems and the operational logic of a facility running at scale. The photographs needed to show that infrastructure clearly, without turning it into spectacle.

Access to a running data centre comes in rooms and hours, not days. Our CSCS supercomputing photography covered racks, cooling and cable runs in the order the operators could open them. Geometric framing and even light keep the scale legible without dramatising it.
