Furka Pass, Switzerland
Furka Pass sits at 2,429 metres, linking Gletsch in Valais with Realp in Uri. Our assignment was landscape photography, high in the Alps, but the pass held more than open terrain. Alongside the mountain ridge and shifting light, we documented decommissioned military bunkers built to resemble alpine chalets, and objects left behind in the landscape.
Light is the variable at that altitude. Cloud crosses the pass in minutes and rebuilds the terrain each time; there is no waiting it out. In the Furka Pass landscape photography, the bunkers sit almost invisibly in the same frames, which is what they were built to do.
