University Hospital Basel, Switzerland
University Hospital Basel (Universitätsspital Basel, USB) commissioned photography for its annual report, covering three innovation areas: AI-assisted diagnostics, virtual reality applications and robot-guided laser surgery. Each subject required a different approach: the VR sequences shot in controlled conditions, the surgical robotics under live clinical lighting. USB is among Switzerland’s largest medical centres, and the brief called for images that showed the technology without reducing the people using it to background detail.
Photographing in a working hospital means fitting to the clinical schedule, not the other way around. In the University Hospital Basel photography, the robot appears with the team at work. That keeps the people legible next to the machine.
