Burckhardt Compression, Busan, South Korea

Part of the long-running collaboration with Burckhardt Compression, this photography assignment took us to Busan, South Korea’s largest port. The brief called for an LPG gas carrier photographed at sea, a vessel of the kind BC builds compressor systems for. The ship we wanted never left the harbour. We photographed it there and moved it back out to sea in post-production. Alongside the vessel, a portrait of one of the people behind the work, made on a street near the port.

The composite was planned. The vessel was photographed at the quay from the angle and in the light the open-sea background required, and the plates were made on the same trip. In the Burckhardt Compression photography from Busan, the portrait supplies the scale that the ship alone does not.
