Shenyang Yuanda Compressor, Shenyang, China

Shenyang Yuanda Compressor (SYCC) operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Burckhardt Compression in Liaoning. The plant builds reciprocating compressor systems for the Chinese market, and we set out to document that operation at the scale it runs. Our photography covered the production infrastructure, the workshop floors and equipment at various stages of completion. Few compressors on this floor stand finished; most are still on their way to becoming one.

The hall is too large to hold in one frame, so the series is structured by the machines themselves, at different stages of assembly. Overhead light, a great deal of dark metal and crews moving through it. The Shenyang Yuanda Compressor photography follows the process, not a finished object.
